Asbestos Survey & Surveyors

S J Treloar & Associates (Environmental) Ltd provide asbestos surveyors throughout the UK accredited by the British Institute of Occupational Hygienists. Our surveyors have considerable knowledge of construction and its processes which make us more circumspect and efficient at identifying possible Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM's).

The Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations were extensively revised in 2002 and introduced the new explicit duty to manage asbestos in premises. This requires employers, owners and managers of non-domestic and managed residential properties to assess the asbestos risk and where relevant have in place a managed asbestos register. This enables any future workers to assess the presence of any ACM's before work is carried out, thus eliminating any damage or health risk. If properly controlled and maintained there is no reason why ACM's cannot remain in use for many years.

Consequences of not taking action:
• H.S.E. inspectors have the power to issue probation notices closing areas or entire sites.
• Directors can be disqualified.
• Companies can be fined an unlimited amount and individuals £20,000.
• Responsible individuals can be imprisoned for up to 2 years.

S J Treloar & Associates (Environmental) Ltd are able to undertake survey types to HSG 264 as set out below.

Management Surveys
This is the standard type of survey that is undertaken to identify the prescence of ACM's within a building.  The report will locate, as far as possible, the locations of ACM's and advise whether they are safe to manage or require removal.  This type of survey allows for a small sample of the material to be assessed by a laboratory to conclude whether the material contains asbestos.  This survey is developed using digital imaging and risk assessments, from which we are able to advise on any appropriate course of action for any ACM's positively identifed.

Refurbishment and Demolition Surveys
Any building that is to be demolished or refurbished will require an intrusive survey to identify any asbestos that may be present within areas that may be difficult to reach.  This type of survey may involve destructive inspection as necessary to gain access to all areas.  A full sampling programme is undertaken and estimates of the volume and surface area of the ACM's are made.

All our surveys and sampling techniques for suspected ACM's are carried out in accordance with the requirements of the Health and Safety Executive guidance document 'HSG 264'. All samples obtained are sent to an independent UKAS accredited laboratory for analysis.

Successful management of ACM's is based on the effective identification, inspection and the implementation of an effective management programme. Working alongside your own staff, we can review your existing management plan and risk assessment and update your records with any noted deterioration, or further asbestos which has been revealed since the original survey.
